German dance is an example of the exchange and the relationship among the Courtly Dance, the social dance, and the folk dance. Many German dances originated in Austria and spread through Germany, parts of Bohemia and Switzerland and the German-speaking sections of the Czech Republic. One of the main German dances is the Schuhplattler. This is a traditional folk dance popular in the Alpine regions of Bavaria and Austria. In days gone by, young men wished to impress marriageable young ladies with their dancing prowess. Initially the style was free without rules. Performed usually in the 3/4 time of a Ländler, one would carry out a series of jumps and hip movements to the time of the music. Characteristically the male dancers will rhythmically strike their thighs, knees and soles, clap their hands, and stamp with their feet. Our authentic German Folk Dance Group includes traditional instruments like the trombone and accordion, and is dressed in German Lederhosen costumes. Their repertoire includes various traditional German and Bavarian dances incl. the bench, the lumberjack & the duck dance.
